Question & Answer

(For general MFTIP info, click here)

1. What's changing?

The Ontario Forestry Association (OFA) and Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA) have assisted the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) in the delivery of the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) since 1999.

Effective January 1, 2012, the MNR resumed full administrative and delivery responsibilities for the MFTIP program. Inquiries and applications will now be directed to and handled by MNR program staff in Peterborough.

2. Why is MNR taking the MFTIP program back in house?

The MNR cites internal reorganization and changes to the provincial procurement policies as the reasons. The performance of the OFA and the OWA is not cited as a reason, and MNR maintains that both organizations have done an excellent job over the past 13 years.

3. How will this affect my managed forest plan?

Participants will not be affected by this change as the MFTIP will continue to be available to all eligible landowners. Eligibility criteria, program requirements and application deadlines all remain unchanged. Property files and management plans will be returned to the MNR in Peterborough.

4. Will OFA continue to be involved in MFTIP?

The Ontario Forestry Association (OFA) and the Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA), who have been program service providers since 1999, will no longer be contacts for questions or issues regarding MFTIP. Please direct all inquiries or questions you may have to MNR MFTIP program staff in Peterborough (contact info above). The OFA and the OWA will continue to work with the MNR in a modified capacity during the transition period of January through August 2012, but inquiries are to be directed to MNR program staff in Peterborough.

5. What does this change mean for MFTIP?

MFTIP continues to be an important and successful part of MNR's collective suite of initiatives and programs designed to conserve and protect Ontario's natural heritage to ensure it remains a proud legacy for future generations.

Participation levels in MFTIP increase each year and this trend is expected to continue in the future as more landowners become aware of the benefits that the Program offers to assist them in achieving their forest stewardship goals. In 2010 there were over 12,800 properties participating in the MFTIP across the province covering 1.6 million ac.

6. Can I still call the OFA for information about managing my property?

Absolutely. The OFA is committed to supporting private land forestry in the province and providing our members with tools to make the right decisions on their properties. In lieu of MFTIP we are looking to expand our stewardship programs and increase the membership benefits. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
